Compact Advanced Satellite

  • The development of the Compact Advanced Satellite is planned to expand the domestic industrial base, foster the satellite industry and to promote the export of satellites. The goal is to develop 12 500-kg class low earth orbit medium-sized satellites for use in precision earth observation, etc.

    To reduce the development period and cost, a standard platform(BUS) main body will be developed and applied to all Compact Advanced Satellites. In addition, various payloads such as optical cameras, SAR, microwave and hyper-spectral systems will be developed with Korean technologies.

    The 500-kg class Compact Advanced Satellites standard platform will be developed by 2019, and two 50cm resolution precision ground observation medium-sized satellites will be developed using the standard platform. The Compact Advanced Satellites 1 will be developed jointly by KARI and the related industries. KARI will systematically transfer its experience of satellite development as well as the system and standard platform development technologies accumulated over the years to the industries concerned so that they can assume full responsibility for development of the Compact Advanced Satellites 2 and follow-up satellites.

    Commercialization of the Compact Advanced Satellites is expected to be relatively easy as they can be developed in a fairly short period and at a low cost compared to medium-sized to large-size multipurpose satellites. The plan is to develop multiple satellites in a short period and operate them simultaneously to satisfy various requirements for earth observation by the public sector and reduce the observation interval.
